A Very Special Valentine

Two years ago on this day, an old friend of mine suffered a loss that no person should ever have to suffer. Surrounded by her mom and dad, little miss Sofia Isabella Dente was brought home for one night in her beautiful bedroom, snuggled with her parents in love until she left this world in peace.

Her mother’s description of that night, of their entire time at home, spanning Valentine’s Day and into the next, is something that will never leave me. You could feel their unconditional love, their fear, their pain. I can’t even begin to understand the pain that they experience even today, but I know the love that comes with being a parent, and am one of so many who wishes that things had gone so very differently. Lori wrote a blog for a while, which I encourage you all to read if you want to read about a journey of unfathomable love, a love awakened in so very many people who Sofie touched.

Today, Sofie, I sit. I sit with your mama and daddy, with your brother, and with all those whose hearts and souls you have changed in your short 21 days of life, and over the past 2 years. Your life has touched people around the world, and we are forever better because your mama shared you and your story with us.

I hope you are dancing with butterflies today, little one.

Lori, Mike & Alex – all my love. Today and always.

  1. This brought me to tears. Thank you for sharing. I can’t even imagine what they went through. Sending hugs and prayers to that amazingly strong family and you. xo
